    Description

Offering an original ceramic stein made in Germany.  Mug measures 6.25" tall x 3.5" diameter at base x 2.5" diameter at top opening.  Stein has three decorative motifs: 1. By the handle is a shield in Art Nouveau style, or Jugendstil, with the words,
    "
Behüt Dich Gott, es wär so schön gewesen"
in the center, which translates to "God protect you, it was so fine"; 2.  opposite the handle is a scene depicting a trumpeter with his horse and a castle in the distance; 3. the third panel is similar to the first - a shield in Art Nouveau style with the words "
behüt Dich Gott, es hat nicht sollen sein"
in the center, which means "God protect you, it never should have been."
The words and decoration come from the opera "Der Trompeter von Säckingen" by Victor Nessler in 1884, which was based on a poem by
    Joseph Victor von Scheffel
    (1826 –  1886), a German
    poet and novelist.  His poem
Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The trumpeter of Saeckingen)
(1853) is a romantic and humorous tale which immediately gained extraordinary popularity.
The decoration is clean and sharp and shows no visible wear; the navy and brown background is strong as you can see in the photos.  The handle is plain.  There is crazing in the finish as is expected with a piece of this age.  This was produced before WW II since the bottom says "GERMANY" and not "WEST GERMANY."
The top of the handle has a small hole, which leads me to believe that this stein might have had a pewter lid at one time.  I am not a stein expert, but the smoothness of the glaze leads me to believe that it probably did NOT have a lid because there seems to be no wear that I would expect if there had been a lid.
