  • Condition: This antique mini stein is in very good condition. The glaze is bright and shiny. It is clean inside and outside but there is a light discoloring on the inside near the bottom. The hand painted design is in excellent condition. The colors and lettering are bright and sharp. There are very little, if any wear marks to the painted design. There is some wear and paint loss to the blue trim around the base. There is a small crazing spot to the glaze outside on the front that is visible only when the exterior becomes wet. This is shown in the last photograph. There is no post-factory damage, such as nicks, chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs.

    Description

    DESCRIPTION: For sale is a unique antique FRANZ RINGER bierhumpen or beer beaker / mini stein.  This is a gray stoneware stein.  It has a smooth exterior with a high gloss salt glaze over the gray stoneware.  It is decorated over glaze with a multi-color hand painted design of a dancing clown with a sausage in one hand and a paddle in the other hand.  The clown has on a bright red suit with striped blue pants, a green conical hat, and white ruffled collar.  Encircling him are 16 yellow balls.  Near the clown's foot is the stylized initials "FR" of the artist Franz Ringer.
    There is also a short poem in black script that my friend Thomas G. deciphered and translated as follows:
    Wer isst und trinkt zur rechten Zeit,
    hält sich gesund stets seinen Leib,
    ist frohgemuht um voller Lust-
    so fröhlich wie, Hans Kaspar just.
    The one who eats and drinks at the right time,
    and keeps his body healthy,
    will be in good spirits and as happy
    just like Hans Kaspar.
    The stein blank has no manufacturer markings other than the capacity mark of 1/8 L.  Based on the style of the stein, the capacity mark, and known suppliers for Ringer, I believe the stein blank was produced by Merkelbach & Wick.  Other possibilities are Reinhold Merkelbach, Marzi-Remy, or Villeroy & Boch.
    This small stein stands approximately 3-1/4 inches (8.3 cm) tall.  It is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) across the top rim and 2-5/16 inches (5.9 cm) across the base.  The capacity is in excess of 1/8 liter (4-fluid ounces).
