Description
Antique Mettlach Beaker“
Pipe Smoker By The Sea
”
Mold #2327
Decoration #1190
¼ Liter
I have collected beer steins and glasses for over 50 years. Now it is time to downsize a bit, so here is an antique Mettlach beaker (“Becher” in German) with a man smoking a pipe by the sea. The scene is not Germany but Holland. There is a sailboat in the background and some birds in the sky. Also note the Klompen (wooden shoes). The Dutch were a favorite topic for ceramics in the late 1800s / early 1900s.
This is one of a series of six beakers with decoration numbers 1187 through 1192 and depicting a person engaged in various activities.
The beaker is
¼ liter
capacity,
5 inches
tall and almost
2¾ inches
wide at the rim.
Condition:
The beaker is in MINT condition. It has no flakes, chips, hairlines, cracks, crazing or staining. The interior is a milky white.
Markings:
The beaker has standard Mettlach markings. The mold number (2327), the date code (should be “08” for 1908) and the quality control number (“3”) are impressed in the bottom. The Mercury mark and “MADE IN GERMANY” are stamped in green. The decoration number (1190) and “GESCHUTZT” (Protected) are stamped in black.
